"I Need Sunflowers!"

I love sunflowers! We are fortunate to have a wonderful local flower grower at Dahlia May Flower Farm.  Please visit the link, it is a feast for the eyes! Last week Melaine, the owner, posted on Facebook a message that she was running a special on sunflowers.  I hopped in the car first thing Thursday morning and toodled to Stockdale. Their farmstand is gorgeous and the drive there was beautiful.  Sherry, the farm manager, came out to talk and showed me around the farmstand. I have purchased flowers from Melanie the last couple years at the Trenton Farmer's market but had never been to her home/farmstand. I will be back!
During a rainstorm last week Chuck called me upstairs and said bring your camera. The moon was out during the storm.
Gorgeous clouds late one afternoon.
It hasn't been very busy at the bird feeders but with the cooler weather a few more are coming.
As gorgeous as ever!
My brother spent last week in Zambia for work. He will try anything once as this photo proves. He is snacking on fried crickets. He stated he thinks it is an acquired taste!
We have been enjoying lots of sunny weather.
The chipmunk put in an appearance.
Isn't there an old wive's tale about lots of pine cones means a bad Winter???
The morning of the full moon.
So many bees around. I am fascinated by them.
Love their wings.
Could have used a wagon again on our walk yesterday morning. A house was doing a clean out and I snapped up this. It was pretty filthy but a five minute scrub and it was clean. I am thinking Fall decor on the front steps! A few pumpkins and some gourds...... We had a similar one growing up.

Looks like a warm humid week here. Chuck is on duty for the next seven days. Not fun as calls in the middle of the night are common.

Have a good day!
Robin

I made a mistake! My brother is eating fried CATERPILLARS!

  2. One summer as a kid, we grew MONSTER sunflowers, with huge seed heads. I recall how much I enjoyed eating those raw seeds, straight from the flower. Every year I swear I'm going to plant some, and then I forget until it's too late! We have the perfect spot on the alley-side of our barn. Miss Kitty is gorgeous!

    1. Hi Vicki, I have no luck growing sunflowers! The birds or squirrels always seem to knock them over or eat them. My Dad grew fabulous ones too I remember when I was a kid.
Miss Kitty is beautiful isn't she?
      Have a good day!

    1. Hi Cheryl, crickets or caterpillars, I would not be brave enough to try either!
I am a sucker for any flower and bees certainly go along with flowers.
      Have a nice day!

    1. Oh Pom Pom, I am sure we will be woken up numerous times. Chuck's working days are coming to an end sooner rather than later. I am getting too old for this!!! ;)
Most cats seem to like to munch on all kinds of bugs. Both our cats loved spiders.
      Snuggle Timothy for me!

  5. I would have to be starving, and I do mean starving, to eat bugs/insects. I know they're commonly eaten in many other cultures, but...gag. Not even covered in chocolate!

Great full moon shot, I missed it this time around. And superb bee shots, Robin!

I don't know about the pine cones, but there's an old wives tale that if the mountain ash trees are laden with berries, there will be a lot of snow. Well, the trees I've seen, including one outside my cubicle window, are laden indeed. Does not bode well for winter 2018!

    1. Hi Kim, Bob is always up for anything and travelling all over the world he has tried some interesting things. If I was starving I would try them!
I have heard the old wives tale about mountain ash berries too. I believe the Farmers Almanac said it would be a tough Winter. I hope this is the last one Chuck works!
Have a good day and talk soon!

    1. Hi Henny, I should try and grow sunflowers too. I have a perfect spot that gets lots of sun. I just have to find a way to keep the critters from knocking them over!
Thinking about you and all your critters.

  9. You took an amazing shot of that bee. What is the brown ball on his leg, do you know?
The Sunflowers are so pretty. I saw some at a roadside stand on the weekend unfortunately DH was driving along at a good speed and by the time he realized I wanted to stop we were half a mile down the road. ( A good reason to drive more slowly. In case I see a flower stand or a house that I want to stare at or many other reasons.)

    1. Hi Granny Marigold, the brown ball on the bee's leg is it's pollen sac. I believe it combs off it's body with it's legs which have hairs like a comb and the pollen is deposited in these sacs. I could be very wrong but I think that is how it works.
I am the same! I suddenly say "stop" to poor Chuck as we are driving. He has gotten use to it after all these years and the odd time will stop without my even saying anything.
Hope your weather and air is improving!

  12. Sunflowers, clouds, doves, and bees... all made for some pretty fantastic shots. Many of the birds that visited my feeders during the summer seem to be gone. However, I seem to have an entire family of eight doves. I love them! I'll check out the pine cones here......

  13. Not too sure about those fried crickets. : )
Sunflowers are beautiful, such happy flowers. I have them popping up all over in my yard.
I planted a bunch of seeds each week in the spring so I'd have them blooming till frost.

  16. Love the sunflowers! So pretty. Didn't grow any this year. I usually get volunteers, but none showed up! Guess it is time to sow a few more seeds. I was interested to read that the farm where you got the sunflowers was called "Dahlia May." I took a Dahlia class just today. I can see how it could be almost addicting. So many varieties, shapes and colors. Here they are a labor of love though, because you have to dig out the tubers and store them overwinter, then replant in spring. Maybe it is the same where you live?

  17. The sunflower is gorgeous. They are so cheery!
I would think crickets would be an acquired taste =)
I've been noticing early signs of fall...lots of crickets singing in the evening. Berries and maple keys thick on the branches. It's dark so early now in the evening.
Now the pine cones. I'll have to be on the look out for them.
The photo of the bee on the flower is amazing.
Ear scritches to your lovely feline.
