What a week!

What a NICE week, that is. We took my Mum back to my brother's house yesterday after lunch.
On Thursday we did go to Napanee. It was a lovely visit with my Mum relating many stories of summers spent here.
The photo above is of my grandfather's parent's house. My great grandfather was a carpenter. He built this house by hand in the early 1900's. The lot was  much bigger at one time. My great grandfather had a huge garden and sold fruit and vegetables from a road side stand in front of the house. The present owners take very good care of it!
This house is my grandmother's parent's house. It is quite small, but at one time had a porch all the way around the house. My grandmother lived here with her parents and three siblings. It must have been a tight fit!
This is a shot of the Gibbard Furniture Factory. It closed a few years ago but is obviously beautifully maintained. The furniture was very high quality and pricey too! You can quite often find it in antique stores.
Pardon the blurry picture but I just wanted to show what the soil in this part of Ontario is comprised of. ROCK! I grew up down in the Niagara Peninsula where the soil is rich and loamy. I remember the first time I tried to dig a garden here. I didn't get too far!

I have many more photos of our week which I will share in future posts.

I hope everyone had a wonderful week. It seems rather quiet in the house now with just the two of us!

Take care.

Robin

  1. The house your great grandfather built is gorgeous. Did you go inside? I'd have knocked, to see if I could check it out! :-)

I'm surprised the Gibbard building is still there. I figured it would have been turned into something else by now -- here in town some money-grubbing developer would have razed it and put up condos by now, or yet more student housing.

Glad you had such a good week! :-)

    1. Hi Kim, no we did not knock on the door. My Mum wants to remember the house as it was in her childhood.
I was surprised they have not made the Gibbard factory into condos or a shopping plaza too. The downtown has not changed too much since my Mum was a child.
      Have a good day!

  2. Lovely old home that your grandfather built. Love the porch. Love the old furniture store.
I thought there were a lot of rocks at HT, but it's nothing compared to that!! : )
Glad you had such a nice visit. I know that quietness after company has left. Kind of nice and sad at the same time.

I love my great grandfather house too. We are so lucky it is still around to visit.
You are spot on about the quietness after a visit. I miss seeing my Mums face every morning!

    1. Hi Caren, yes it is a beautiful house. It still looked in really good shape and has hardly been changed on the outside since my Mums childhood. It is a testimony to my great grandfathers carpentry skills that the house looks so great over 100 years later.

    1. I feel very lucky to see my great grandparents houses. My Dad's grandmother's house is still standing too and we were able to see it a few years ago. I feel very fortunate to be able to still see them all.
