Road Trip Part 2

Yesterday when I left you we all had just sat down for lunch. I always bring our lunch and bring enough for Mum. She is not really able to get out much anymore. She gave up her car about 1 1/2 years ago so she is rather housebound as both my brother and his wife work full time. Now with Chuck retired we will be able to visit more often. We stayed for about 3 hours and then had to leave as we had an appointment in Belleville at 4:00 p.m.
On the way out we stopped quickly at Home Depot and this car was in the parking lot. Terribly blurry. I didn't follow my usual rule and take two pictures of everything.
This is a solar installation just down the highway from my Mum.
The clouds were constantly changing. It looked like rain one minute, then clear the next.
This is the giant apple at "The Big Apple" in Colbourne. We have not been there in years. The place gets mixed reviews. It is basically a large bakery and outside they have mini-putt. We had a pie from there years ago and we were not impressed with it. I have read a number of reviews and it doesn't seem any better. Too bad as it is right off the highway and many people must visit it.
We have watched this barn deteriorate over the last 29 years. If we have a few more very snowy winters I imagine it will just collapse.
We pulled off the highway to this great fruit and vegetable stand called "Rutherfords". They are open from about mid May to mid November. Every fruit and vegetable you could want with many of them coming right from the farm located behind the store. They have everbearing strawberries that are so good I can never resist buying them. They also have the added bonus of many adorable animals.
This chicken was very sociable and posed nicely for photos.
These two llamas ( I think) are hilarious. I have never been able to get a decent photo of the brown one. Whenever someone comes over to the pen he gets all huffy and stomps off into the barn.
This one just ignores everyone but at least he stayed put.
The little chicks (? sorry, I don't know much about chickens) came running over when they saw us.
We heard a noise and turned and looked beside us and this one was in the tree!
Back on the road again and this black cloud descended. This time along with it came quite a bit of rain. By the time we got home it had stopped.
We made it to our appointment in Belleville on time then came home and had supper. I was standing at the sink doing dishes and I looked out and Oreo was waiting outside. I went out back and sat and cuddled her for 15 minutes or so and then came back in and finished the dishes. Nice way to end the day!
Just a few errands today and some yard work. I am off to bake a peach pie now. The peaches are fantastic this year.
Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

  1. What, someone else is baking a peach pie? Are you trying Rian's recipe? (Not sure you follow her blog, they're in Texas, retired, LOTS of feral cats they take care of, plus their own, just lost Molly, who was 22, I think).

    But I digress!

I hope your mum's health is good, at least. If so, does she have any options to get out via senior volunteer pick-up/drive service? Not sure the area she's in would be large enough for that. I love that she's not far from you...I wish I was in easy commute (hour or so) to both my parents (that would take some doing, east coast and west!).

I haven't been to the Big Apple in years, either. I probably would like the pie or whatever, though for me to rave about crust, well, it would have to be REALLY good. I'm not overly fond of crust, at least not the kind you get in a grocery store.

If you guys ever go to Gananoque, you must stop in at Panache on main street, a little bakery/café. Maybe it wouldn't suit you, but Dad and I LOVE it there and always splurge on sweets and something savoury when he visits. I'm not that fussy, though I've heard from others that they think the food is good too. :-)

The brown llama made me smile...he's as bad as my cats are around cameras.

Oreo is a sweetie. It's kind of nice to be able to get your cat-fix without having the responsibility. Did Lynn tell you she has 7 in the house, all rescues? Oy! :-)

    1. I didn't try Rian's recipe. I just did a traditional two crust pie. I do try and read her " Older, but Better" blog. What a great lady.
My Mum's health is o.k., she has her ups and downs. She smoked for 30 years and is paying the price now. She is totally with it and has a great sense of humour. We always laugh a lot! There is options for her to get out of the house and we all have tried but my Mum was always a loner so is quite happy with her own company. She has a cleaning lady come in weekly, my sister and I phone her on alternating days and my brother and his wife are very social and have company usually a couple times a week so she does have company. We all suggested senior groups but she said " I am not sitting in a circle playing games". She also has difficulty walking so that makes it hard. I bet you are sorry you asked that question now aren't you Kim?
We haven't been down your way for a year or so. We must do it soon.
Oreo is terrific! She is 15 but seems much younger. I do love her!
Lynn did tell me she has 7 cats. I would love to met them some day.
Take care Kim and talk soon.

    2. Nope, not sorry I asked at all. :-)

My mom still smokes heavily, even though she's had life-and-death health issues and shouldn't be smoking at all. I guess if you've been doing it for 60 years it's hard to give up, particularly when you're not motivated to do so.

Take care and savour that peach pie! :-)

  3. Well, you certainly had a very full day yesterday. Good thing you have only a few errands to run today. Made me tired just reading about it. * just kidding* That huffy brown llama is hilarious and the haughty one is too.

  5. I love the picture of you and your Mom. I enjoyed all the pictures. I miss road trips with my husband. We just don't go anywhere anymore. He says we will go more when he retires. We'll see.

    1. Thanks! It's funny. I was brought up with parents that were always up for road trips. Chuck and his parents never went anywhere but Chuck loves road trips. I travelled so much when I was growing up that alot of times I am happy just to stay home. We compromise and have found a happy medium.

    1. I always am a little cautious around the brown llama for exactly that reason. He has some pretty dangerous looking teeth too. I do love Oreo too. Take care!
