Home Cookin'

I was browsing through a magazine I picked up at a thrift store a few days ago and came upon this article. (FYI, I had taken a very clear photo of this but it and 10 other photos disappeared from my computer! GGGRRR) I immediately wanted to start baking! Does this happen to anyone else?
I plan on trying a few recipes from this article over the weekend. It was too late in the day to start a new recipe in case I didn't have all the ingredients. They all sound delicious. Larry's Braided Sweet Bread, Orange-Honey Bread, Apple Focaccia......it goes on and on. I had a large bag of reduced bananas so I made Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins first.
This was one of the other clear photos that disappeared. Next I made Dinner Rolls. They are yummy with honey!
Still very icy and cold here.
Do you remember a couple of posts ago I mentioned about a squirrel that was toppling over? We assumed he may have been eating fermented crabapples but that does not appear to be the case. The poor thing obviously has fallen out of a tree or was born with something wrong. When he walks he is always veering to the left. He is eating well and is quite plump so I assume he is managing o.k.
I put lots of food out everyday. He was under the feeders for a good hour this afternoon eating. The other squirrels pretty much leave him alone when he is eating.
Just after I snapped this photo he toppled over and laid there eating his peanut. He jumped back up after a few seconds none the worst for wear. I will be surprised if he manages to make it through the winter. He can't run very fast so I imagine he will make an easy target for the hawks. I know it is nature but it still isn't pleasant!

I hope you have a wonderful evening!

  1. No, I can't say I'd immediately want to start baking. Ha. I would, however, want to immediately start EATING the baked goods. :-D

That's an especially great shot of the mourning dove. I think they're such pretty birds. Not flamboyant, just quietly beautiful.

Poor squirrel. Whatever happens to him, at least he's been well-cared for and fed by you. And who knows, maybe he will survive, poor thing.

BTW, I got all excited to see a bit of blue sky very early this afternoon, but the clearing didn't last long at all. Nothing but grey-on-grey these days! Dreary days make me want to eat baked goods too. LOL.

    Have a good evening!

    1. I love mourning doves too for their simple beauty. No flashy colours or stripes but they are so pretty to watch.
Tippy (yes I named him!) will be very well fed. It breaks my heart to watch him. I am such a softie! For a few years growing up my parents fed a grey squirrel with no tail. We called her Stubina. I remember we were all very sad when she didn't show up any more.
I saw a little bit of sun yesterday too. Grey, grey here again this morning.
      Take care!

  2. I never, ever get the urge to bake, (but I admire those like yourself who do)...that being said I LOVE to cook and I cook daily........I am a "home style" cook, not gourmet. I just adore cooking, but baking? Fuhget about it! Happy New Year! catchatwithcarenandcody

  3. I like looking through to see what I'd like to try but don't have the urge to do it right away. : ) But I'd like to eat it!

  4. My sister was telling me about some soft pretzels she baked and one of these days I'll get her recipe and try them. They had garlic salt and onion powder and Parmesan cheese in them.... they're bound to be good. I like baking but not cooking. Isn't it funny how often we like either one or the other?

    1. If I had a choice I would pick baking over cooking.
Your pretzels sound delicious. You must let us know when you try them.
      Take care.

  5. Oh, poor little squirrel, thank goodness he has somewhere to come and get food, I hope he makes it through. I know what you mean about the baking, I love a bit of inspiration. Happy new year xx

    1. I hope Tippy makes it through the winter too. We have been blessed with such a mild one so far, that has probably helped him to survive.
It doesn't take much to inspire me to do some baking. I just love it!
Happy New Year to you too Cheryl!

  6. Poor little squirrel. I always get sad because really there is nothing anyone can do for an animal like that. You sure can't pick him up. You feed him and that's a good thing. Oh gosh, I wish I would get in a baking mood. I am just not a baker. My baked goods just don't turn out pretty like everybody else.

    1. I am too soft-hearted about all animals. I worry and worry about them. Silly I know.
I'm pretty well always in a baking mood. Both of my grandmothers were terrific bakers but I don't compare to them!
