Walk Out To Winter.

We woke up this morning to 10cm of fresh snow. Very pretty and fluffy. As I typed that I thought "Easy for me to say. I don't HAVE to go out in it." The photo above was taken 46 years ago almost to the day. I was 6 and my sister Joanne 12. Our next door neighbour built a skating rink every year in his backyard for the neighbourhood kids to use. I was a terrible skater so my Dad gave me a chair to use for balance. Joanne was a terrific skater! She was in many competitions and usually won or placed high. I love our homemade hats. I imagine my Mum made them.
It was my birthday a couple days ago so I made an apple tart for dessert.  Scrumptious!
The feeders were extremely busy the last few days. This squirrel is enjoying his peanut on top of our neighbours archway into their backyard.
Terribly blurry but this was the one and only photo I could get of one of the neighbourhood strays. He is very handsome with beautiful eyes. I noticed he sleeps under our deck some nights. It is very protected there so he is out of the wind.
I love the red stripe on the back of the redpolls.
I took these next photos early this morning. The snow was still clinging to the trees.
The big pine tree in our front yard.
I love birch trees! Every home we have owned we have had a birch tree. This one is in our front yard.
The sun starting to peek through the clouds.
Goldfinch surveying the backyard.
Female cardinal.
Redpoll and a couple juncos snoozing in the pine tree.

My Mum had her cataract surgery this morning but I haven't heard from my brother yet to find out how she is doing. I don't want to phone and possibly wake her up so I will call tomorrow if I don't hear from him today.

It was sunny for most of the morning so Chuck and I walked to Walmart and then downtown to do our errands instead of taking out the car. It was lovely. Not too cold and the sun shining brightly. We live at the edge of town on top of a hill so coming back from downtown is all uphill. I was flagging by the time we got to the top of the hill. When we got home and saw the time we realized we had been walking for almost two hours. Lunch tasted very good after all that exercise!

Take care and have a good weekend!
Robin

  1. Oh, I just sent you an email re: your mum, I hope you've heard by now.

Gees, Robin, that poor cat! I wonder if anyone in the area would be able to trap him, neuter and release or if he's not feral, find him a home. :-/

The snow WAS very pretty this morning, all fluffy. Easy to shovel, pretty take pics of.

Your apple tart looked delicious. I would eat that in one sitting. Well, the filling anyway!

Take care, have a good evening.

    1. I still haven't heard how my Mum is doing. My brother is not the best for staying in touch so I will phone this morning.
It seems we always have a few stray cats running around the neighbourhood. As soon as he sees someone he shoots off. I was looking out a basement window and he just happened to walk by.
So glad everything is good at your house. No more worrying!
      Take care and talk soon.

    1. Hi Gill, I will find out today how my Mum us doing.
My Dad was always taking photos. When my Mum moved in with my brother she divided them up amongst the three of us. I have quite a stash!
We are blessed to have all the birds around us. When we were looking to move we were seriously considering a new home but the developer had ripped out all the trees. The first thing Chuck said was "You will have no birds" He knows what is important to me! Our home now is surrounded by 50 to 100 year old trees so lots of birds.

  3. You do manage to take the best bird photos!!
Walking for two hours would do most of us in and walking in snow (and uphill) makes it even harder!

    1. Hi G.M, it is pure luck any of my photos turn out! A photographer I was talking to last year told me,as I was complaining I never could get any good photos, that for every good photo he took he took 100 bad ones. And he was a professional! You should see all the bad ones I take.
It was so lovely to walk for so long. I thought I would be sore this morning but nothing!
      Have a good weekend!
