"Walk The Way The Wind Blows"

Last Friday being a holiday Chuck and I decided to go for a long walk. As we set out we weren't sure where we would end up but it was such a gorgeous day, who cares!
We headed for the west end of town as that is a direction we don't go too often.
We strolled along Highway 2 as it has very wide edges so we didn't feel like we were going to be mowed down any second.
We passed this beautiful house right on the edge of town.
In the Summer they have a great antique store in the barn. Recognize it Kim?
Behind a derelict house. So wanted to have a snoop around the yard but SOMEONE didn't think that would be a good idea.
Further along we came across the remains of a house and barn. The things you miss as you are whizzing by in a car.
I only had my walking shoes on or I would have gone down into the old barn.
We turned down a side road to get away from the traffic and it was lovely. So peaceful with the birds singing.
The water in the creek was so clear. I loved the patterns in the soil at the bottom of the creek.
The tracks just go on and on and on..........
Little abandoned shed in the middle of a field. The door was locked!
We passed a few cattle farms but it was mostly fields.
Someone was watching us!
The sky was gorgeous!
I found a few coltsfoots blooming. We ended up walking for two hours. Going back later with the car we found out it was another 10km walk. Someone (me!)was pooping out so we didn't go to the end of the road. That would have taken us right to Lake Ontario and added another few kms. We plan to do it on our bicycles shortly.
I came across this photo a few days ago. I must have been 7 or 8. That is Simon on my lap. He would have been 2 or 3. He lived to be 20 in pretty good health. He saw me from kindergarten to being married. I still miss him.

It is pouring rain as I type this but it is great for the lawns and gardens.

Have a good day!
Robin

  1. What a precious photo of you and Simon. He lived a long life and I know you miss him. Kaboodle has been with us 14 years - thru so much of life!
You sure had a gorgeous day for a walk. That first house is huge! AND beautiful.
So nice to see the sights around your town.

  3. First, that b&w photo of the creek bed is fantastic. Art.

Second, what a great walk! Oh, poop, never mind what "someone" thought about exploring the derelict property. I'd have gone with you! LOL.

Third, I recognized the magnificent old house before I saw the antique barn -- I just couldn't remember where (with you) I'd seen it, until the barn pic.

Watch out for ticks on your rambles now! You are *so* lucky to have all these places to walk, away from city concrete, Robin.

    Have a lovely day!

P.S. What a sweet old photo of you and Simon. Definitely a treasure to have! :-)

    1. Hi Kim, I was so surprised how clear the water was in the creek. The patterns in the soil are lovely.
I know you would have gone with me! Chuck says he has to stay home so he can bail us out!
I do think about ticks when we walk. I have to find a comfortable pair of walking rubber boots. ;)
      Take care!

  4. I love the watcher and I love the old pic of you.. my favorite pics is the 2nd one of the gnarled old tree and the ripples in the sand under the water. you really have a fantastic place to walk, if we walk from our house it is mile after mile of house after house

    1. Hi Sandra, the watcher kept an eye on us the whole time we walked by the farm.
I do know how blessed we are to live in this area. I really would be miserable in a big city.
      Have a good day!

  5. Oh be so happy, that you can walk and walk and walk! Without knee pain. And without "pooping-out" for a long time. :-) Needless to say, I can't do that any more.

Thank you for taking me along, on your walk.

Oh that beautiful old home, at the edge of town.... With the tower and all the gingerbread trim. So happy that it is being taken care of.

and the barn, where they sell antiques in the summer... That is the original carriage house, for the big house. See how it was built, with some of the features of the big house? With the peaks?

The "door" over the main floor door... Up there, was where they kept the hay, for the carriage horses. There would have been a sort of a winch, by which they hauled up the bales of hay, to put in the "attic." And then, they would have trap doors, from which they would let down hay, for the horses to eat.

Like the green carriage house, in this post of mine.

    1. Hi Luna, we can walk for now but Chuck's right knee isn't terribly good. I know we won't be able to do this forever.
I saw your post with the wonderful homes. Lots of farms in our family so I am well acquainted with hay lofts.
      Have a wonderful Wednesday.

    1. You are right, it was a walk of discovery. I don't believe we have ever been down this road. This weekend we want to walk down another side road. One hundred years ago it was the road stagecoaches used between towns.
      Have a good day!

    1. Hi Pom Pom, Simon was adorable. He actually was a cat bred for shows but that was something my parent's weren't interested in. Once or twice a year my Mum would take him to a groomer and he would come back so clean and handsome, then he would promptly roll in something disgusting and be his usual self again!
Enjoy the rest of the week!

  11. Hi dear friend! It is pouring rain here in Montreal today and I so love my long nature walks but am not taking one today due to the rain, so I really appreciate your sharing your photos, which are all lovely! I actually feel as if I took this walk with you. And Simon is delightful, I especially love this photo with you and this sweet cat. :)

    1. Hi Linda, lovely to hear from you again. The rain has stopped here for the moment. I hope it lasts as we usually walk when Chuck arrives home from work around 4:00. I am glad you enjoyed the photos. Chuck and I have taken some lovely walks around Montreal the various times we have visited. I remember a particularly energetic one up Mount Royale (did I spell it incorrectly?) back in the mid-eighties!
Enjoy the rest of the week!

  12. You managed a number of awesome photos again! I can never decide which I like better.....nature( as in those 2 first pics) or lovely old houses. You so often manage to get both kinds.
Too bad you couldn't sneak in to some of the old buildings. Who knows what you'd find!!

    1. Hi Robin,it was a beautiful walk. I thought many of you would enjoy it too.
When I was born my parents had a cat and dog but I was so allergic to them they had to rehome them. Then as I got older and visited with friends and family who had pets I was alright around them. My parents got Simon first, then when I had no allergic reaction my Dad went back and got Simon's sister Sonya.
      Have a good day.

    1. Good morning! Simon was very handsome. The vet would always comment that he was so perfect we should show him. Hat was't something we would have enjoyed and Simon would have hated it. He loved to be dusty and dirty and very much had a very strong will!
The trees are slowly coming out. We have had a few warm days since I took those photos and they are popping out now.
I hope you and your kitties enjoy the day!

The photo isn't very clear but viewing it closer you can see I must have just woken up, my eyes are so puffy. Dad and I were the early risers in the family and of course the cats would be right there too.
Enjoy your day, eat some more Fartons!
