"Find Your Wings"

Around our yard we have I think four shrubs/bushes that have berries in the Winter. The Robin's have been raiding them over the last few days. Right underneath our living room window we have two Holly bushes which the Robin's seem to favour. Inevitably a Robin or two crash into the window. Monday just before supper I heard that distinctive sound. Chuck and I ran over to the window and a female Robin was lying on the snow below the bush. The male stayed right beside her while she lay there. I checked twenty minutes later and she was still there. I looked after supper and they both were gone. The next morning I went outside to walk downtown to do a few errands and I saw this in the snow.
I guess she made a few attempts to fly before she finally was airborne.  Her wings made a beautiful pattern in the snow. Hopefully no more birds will crash into the window!
On the way home from my errands the sun peeked through the clouds.
I took this later in the afternoon.
You know who enjoying his peanuts!
This was a first. A small flock of starlings descended on the feeders.
The Robin was drinking the water in the eavestrough.
These two were far off in a neighbour's tree.
The sun came out yesterday morning and melted some of the snow. This weekend we are to be quite warm. It is a long weekend here (along with Saskatchewan, Alberta and the U.S.) so hopefully you can get out and enjoy it!

Take care.
Robin

  1. Your nature photos are always beautiful. The bird "fossils" in snow are magical. So glad she took off again.

    1. Hi Mitchell, I am glad you enjoy the photos. I can't imagine a day going by and I don't take some!
      Have a good weekend!

  2. I love those patterns in the snow. You need one of those bird (like a hawk) cut-outs on the glass of your window! (Not exactly an attractive solution to keep them away from the glass. LOL.)

That 4th photo, of the sun and with the trees, is incredible. That could be framed, Robin. Just stunning.

    Have a great day!

    1. Hi Kim, I do need something in the front window! Ronna and Eastside Cats down below has a link to some stickers for windows .I will check it out.
Chuck says he wants to frame the fourth photo. I probably just stuck the camera in the air and clicked it as the sun was so blinding.
      Take care Kim!

  3. It breaks my heart to hear a bird fly into a window and we have that happen occasionally on the french doors. Your pictures are beautiful. I think Starlings are pretty, and your black squirrel too. Robins are one of my favorite birds.

    1. The bird crashes have just been happening for the last week or so. I will see about some of the window stickers.
Thanks for your kind words about my photos! It is hard for me to say which bird is my favourite but I am rather partial to Mourning Doves.
      Have a good day Henny!

  4. Fantastic photo of the outline of the robins in the snow. So glad the female was able to recover. I hate it when we hear that clunk on the windows. We have a huge flock of starlings, in fact the robins first came in with them at the end of January. They have gorgeous markings but sure do attack the feeders.

    1. Thanks Linda! I always worry when I hear that clunk. The last time a Wren flew into the patio door. It was sitting and recovering and Sweet Pea snatched it. We think it got away though because probably 20 seconds later Sweet Pea was at the door begging for food! The starlings do have beautiful winter markings but they do as you say attack feeders.
Nice to hear from you again!

  5. I put those decals that Ritchie's Feed & Seed sells that stops bird crashes. They aren't ugly...I got some in the shapes of leaves and they look nice. It's reduced my bird thunks on the window remarkably. I think one bird hit in the last two years and it was okay. They don't glue on but it works with static electricity I think. They've been on for a few years and still going strong. I bet you could find them online too!

    1. Hi Ronna, I will definitely look into the decals. Leaf shaped ones would look nice and if you don't have to glue them on all the better.

  8. Pretty new blog look here!!!!!

Love the simplicity of the mostly white blogger background.

And how it shows off your photos and words.

And the RED link color, contrasts so well, with the white background and the black print!!!

I love to notice Blog Looks!!!! I work on how my blog looks, and appreciate people who notice it. So I like to notice other blog looks. And tell the blog owner.

  9. The patterns in the snow are quite beautiful, even though they were made by a crashed robin. We used to hang bird netting in front of our windows when we were feeding birds. It really worked. Not the most beautiful thing, but a definite life saver for them. Love seeing the skies there.

    1. Hi Robin, I hesitated whether or not to post the photos but since there was a happy outcome I thought everyone would enjoy seeing them Bird netting would definitely work!
In our last home I had much trouble getting any decent sky photos. Not so here!
Hope you are managing to stay dry!

  10. What lovely patterns, in the snow, from the birds. Glad you were able to capture them. And so glad, that she was able to fly away.

We sometimes have birds fly into our back patio doors. But not often, because we can no longer feed the birds. (Bird feeder had to be, where we had to walk over ice/snow to get to it, and it became too dangerous for us, to do it. -sigh-)

So sweet that her male stayed with her.

All of your photos, are wonderful! So nice, to have them stand out, on the white surrounding. :-) I especially love the sky ones.

    1. I was worried quite a bit about her as it sounded like quite a crash. The male stayed close by and watched over her.
That's too bad you can no longer have feeders. It is rather treacherous climbing over the ice and snow.
I'm really glad you enjoy the photos. It makes my day to know you all enjoy them!
      Have a wonderful day!

  16. A previous comment referred to your "bird fossils" and that's so apt. They are a once in a lifetime sort of picture. I am glad the Robin recuperated. I have prisms and pretty things hanging in almost every window. I started because I liked the look but I've realized that birds seem to see them and avoid them.
