Hot Child in the City.

Another hot and humid day today. Janice brought over some lovely tomatoes from her husbands garden for us. Fresh picked so we had to sample them right away. Tomato and cheese sandwiches for lunch!
I mentioned to my Mum I had made platz a few days ago. The first thing she said was "I haven' t had platz in years!" so I baked this pan for her. I will pop it in the freezer and take it to her when we visit in a few weeks.
This squirrel sums up about how I feel in this weather. We did do all the yard work this morning but it was finished by 10:00. At least today there is a breeze.
Take care and stay cool!
Robin

  1. I need to make a 9X13 Blueberry Platz this week for a family get-together. Peach sounds lovely too. Hmmm. Maybe two Platzes?
It's hot here too. Much as I love a clear blue sky now I'm wishing for clouds, preferably rain clouds.

I am wishing for rain clouds too. We are supposed to get cooler on Friday.

  2. Mmm, fresh tomatoes! Ever so much better than the ones in the grocery store. We used to have a small independent grocery store over on Bath Road that would get local produce in all the time, in season. It was great. It didn't stay in business for that long, unfortunately.

Okay, maybe when it's cooler I'll have to try my hand at a platz too. Can the recipe be halved easily? Most of the folks at work eat pretty healthy and avoid a lot of sweets (with a couple of exceptions and I don't mean me), so I wouldn't want to make a whole pan of it. I eat as much as I have on hand, sadly. :-p

This heat is about doing me in. One day I'll get a window air conditioner for the downstairs. Can't put one in my bedroom because it's a crank window. I don't think our bylaws allow us to have one sticking out our street-facing windows anyway, but I could get away with it on the lower level because no one would see it (with the fence). Remind me to ask Chuck if they're easy to put in and how I'd do it. :-)

This list of questions is getting longer and longer.....

    Have a good evening!

    2. The platz recipe I used yesterday makes just a small pan. I cut them up and freeze them.
We are very blessed to have such kind neighbours giving us fresh veggies. This is the first year in 14that we have not had a vegetable garden. Just no time this spring to put one in.Chuck plans to build a raised bed garden next spring.
I have been thinking about the three of you in this heat. We lived from 1986 to 1996 without air conditioning and it was not pleasant!
      Talk soon.

  4. We've been enjoying the tomatoes and cucumbers from our garden. I am so pleased that we actually grew something. : ) There are lots of blossoms on the eggplant plants but not eggplants yet.
We've actually had a hot summer day today, in the mid 80's.

    1. Glad your garden is doing so well. I love the fact that you just walk out into your backyard and supper is waiting there. Well, for us anyway, we are vegetarians.
      Take care!

    1. Platz really are a Mennonite thing. So simple and quick to make. I don't want the oven on long in this heat!
      Take care Gill.

  6. How sweet that you made the Platz for your mom. That black squirrel is so pretty. Is Butterscotch still around?

    1. Butterscotch seems to have disappeared. We saw her about a month ago about a block down our street at someone else's feeders. The black squirrels were always trying to run her off so I guess she moved on. I do miss her!
