House Where Nobody Lives.

I love old houses and we are fortunate to have quite a few here in Trenton. A few months back I had posted a photo here on the blog of an abandoned house a few miles from us. It has been empty for 10+ years. There is no hydro connected to the house and only a couple of the windows are smashed.

As you can see above, it was the residence of Captain Jonathon Porte (It is spelled two different ways in various newspaper articles).  Capt. Porte owned three ships including the Veruna which made daily trips between Trenton and Picton with him at the helm.
He came from Ireland as a young man and married into a local family. I think that is an old door leaning against the house under the deck.
The house has suffered from many years of neglect and was turned into apartments in the 1960's.
Capt. Porte died in 1893 at the age of 52. It is believed his wife sold the house then and moved back to Picton.
Surprisingly the front porch has survived. I peeked in a window and it is in pretty sad shape inside. Somebody (who shall remain nameless!) was signalling me to come down off the steps and get out of there.
That somebody is busy painting the basement steps today. When we renovated the kitchen we stole some trim from the basement steps as some of the trim was ruined when we pulled it off the kitchen wall to make way for cabinets. We will be putting all new trim down the steps.
I have been busy baking. I had a craving for Zucchini Bread a couple of days ago. I didn't freeze any this year but I found some fresh (as fresh as it can be this time of year) at our local grocery store. Yummy!
This loaf is an old favourite of ours. It is a Citrus Carrot Loaf. Rather fiddly to make but worth it. It never rises much but it tastes like a spice cake with a hint of orange. Very healthy as there is only 1/4 cup oil and only whole wheat flour in it. I ran out of walnuts as I had used them all in the Zucchini Bread but it still is delicious.

We are back into the dreary weather again with rain expected all weekend and the return to very cold temperatures next week. The sun was lovely while it lasted!

Take care and have a good weekend!

  1. Poor old home! Someone needs to restore it. It's the kind of building my former cubicle-mate and her hubby would buy here, restore and rent out (as apartments).

Yummy looking baking! Carrot-anything is delicious. (Yet I detest cooked carrots, unless they've got a maple glaze or something else to give them a bit of sweet.)

Rain here too all weekend, and colder next week, but not the same deep freeze we had at the beginning of the week (unless the forecast has changed, which is possible). Anyway, it's ALREADY January 8th! Spring will be here soon!

    1. It is a poor old home! We have so many of them in Trenton. You walk in any of the neighbourhoods surrounding our downtown and you can find them.
I hate cooked carrots too but put them in baked goods, I'll eat them!
It is hard to believe mid January is next week. The winter will be over before we know it.
Take care and have a peaceful weekend.

  3. I agree with Fuzzy Tales, that place is gorgeous and needs to be restored. You should contact HGTV...The Property Brothers and/or Nicole Curtis would probably LOVE to restore that!

  4. I love old houses too. That one is so big. What a shame to see it neglected. Our weather is the same...rain all weekend and turning colder.

    1. I would love to see the inside of this house. When I peeked in I could see the original high ceilings but everything looked pretty sad.
      Have a nice weekend!

  5. I'm another one who loves old houses with all the history that comes with them. I wonder if I'd be brave enough to go peering in windows. I would hope I would.
    Your baking looks so good.

    1. I am so nosy I had to peek in! Chuck is very much a law abiding citizen. How many times over the years has he said to me "The places you drag me through!" Makes life exciting!
      Enjoy your weekend!

  6. Love old houses too. That one is just waiting for the right person to come along and fix her up again.
    Your bread looks delicious.

    1. It will certainly take a special person to fix up that house! It is surprising how much of the original house is still left.
      Take care!
