"You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover"

On a recent trip to one of our local thrift stores I was going through the books as I always do.  They have them stacked with just the spines showing so you can read the titles. I spotted a slim green book with no title on the spine so I pulled it out. It was "These Things Are Ours" by Gwen Frostic. It was such a pretty book so for a toonie ($2.00) it was mine.
What a lovely book! Not knowing a thing about Gwen Frostic I searched online to find out about her. She was born in Michigan in 1906 and passed away in 2001. She has written and illustrated many books. "These Things Are Ours" contains original illustrations, poetry and prose. The paper and the bindings were all made by her so no two books are alike.
Some of the drawings are just a few simple lines but are so beautiful.
It is a book all about nature and the four seasons starting with Fall/ Winter.
The pages are all different kinds of paper. This one with the bluejay was a very rough paper.
This adorable chickadee is only about an inch high.
I find it very relaxing to read her books.
I think this is a flicker.

Trilliums I believe. I am keeping my eyes out for any more of her books. This one was printed in 1960 and is in perfect condition. I do see them on ebay. Hmmm….Christmas is coming up!
Terribly blurry photo but the best of the bunch I took of Chuck and Snowball. She was wiggling around wanting to look at everything when she came inside a few days ago. We haven't seen Sweet Pea and Olive in a few days since we received some snow. Staying in their warm houses I guess!
This squirrel was glaring at me. There wasn't any peanuts out on the deck for him. He shortly got some.

A stay at home day today. I don't go and fight the crowds at the Black Friday sales. Not my thing!

Have a great weekend.
Robin

  1. I don't go fight the crowds either. I don't even like it when the grocery store is crowded.
Aw! Snowball is pretty! Our kitty likes to look outside but he won't be allowed to go. Too many coyotes around here.

    1. I don't care for crowds either. I tend to do all my errands first thing in the morning before the crowds come out.
So glad you are keeping Timothy inside nice and safe. He is a sweetheart!

  2. Robin, what an amazing find that book was! How wonderful to pick up something written by someone who was, in effect, a kindred soul.

Lovely Snowball -- in the house now too! Robin and Chuck's home for wayward critters, I think. That makes you guys kindred spirits in my books. :-)

    Have a good afternoon!

    1. Hi Kim, I was very pleased finding this book. The poetry is so beautiful and the artwork is lovely. It does seem like she was a kindred soul!
I couldn't imagine not taking care of some sort of critters. My parents were always feeding some sort of animals or birds so it got passed along to me!
Take care Kim and hope you feel better soon.

  3. Oh yes, truly a wonderful find. Now I'll also be on the look-out for her books!!!
On my visits to the thrift store I think I spend about 80% of my time in the book dept. Rarely do I come home empty handed.

    1. I hope you will be able to find a book or two of hers. I know you would enjoy them.
I too spend a large part of my thrift store visits in the book section. My groaning bookshelves can attest to that!
      Have a good weekend!

As the weather gets colder I find I have a lot more stay-at-home days. I enjoy our hour walk but that's it!

  5. What a pretty book. I would have brought it home, too. Sweet chickadee. My, that Snowball is lovely. White cats are such show-stoppers. Deb

    1. Hi Deb, thanks for stopping by.
Any books about nature will always catch my eye. There are a couple more drawings from the book I want to post yet.
Snowball is a sweetie. She is a very large cat but so gentle. Well, most of the time. She does like to wallop Sweet Pea once in awhile!
      Have a good weekend!

  6. That really is a beautiful book. I get impatient and overwhelmed looking at the many books in thrift stores. That's why I miss all the good ones. The white kitty is so pretty.

    1. Hi Henny, it is overwhelming the amount of books at the thrift stores. I usually have a quick once over and then concentrate on one section at a time.
      Snowball is lovely!
      Enjoy your weekend!

  7. Robin, lovely book. And you're smart to avoid that whole Black Friday mess! Much better to stay home with cats and squirrels and books! I don't like regular shopping, let alone sale shopping.

    1. Hi Jean, thanks for stopping by! I am no shopper by any means. I do prefer to be outside or with animals not with stuff! Thankfully much shopping can be done online.
      Have a nice Sunday.

I would be afraid of Black Friday sales....the mall was bad enough today!
    Snowball is sweet!

    1. Hi Maggie, I am very pleased I found this book. Hopefully I will be able to find more.
We have a large mall in Belleville which is about 40 kms away. We only go maybe 6 times a year, when we are specifically looking for something. We have a great downtown in our little town and can get most of what we need here.
Snowball is a sweetie. She came in for a snack and cuddle yesterday. Her feet were so filthy, she sat and cleaned them for five minutes, then scooted back outside. She left a heck of a mess behind!
      Take care.
