"Chill In The Air"

It was zero fahrenheit this morning when I got up at six o'clock. I wanted to get up early and get my errands done around town before we hit the road to visit my Mum. It had snowed overnight too so we wanted to leave ourselves extra time to drive the usual hour long drive to Mum's. I phoned Mum around nine thirty to let her know we were leaving and discovered they (Mum lives with my brother and his wife) were suffering from the flu. It was decided it would be best if we stayed away.
We have been "enjoying" cold temperatures for a couple days and the animals have been spending extra time at the feeders. We have quite a number of squirrels vying for the peanuts and sunflower seeds. I noticed this grey squirrel up in the Tamarack tree.
He was pulling off the little cones and eating them. He nibbled for ten minutes or so and then ran off.
We decided since we were all ready to go that we would head down to Cobourg for the morning.
We have been trying to find a certain curtain rod that our Home Depot does not seem to have in stock anymore. There is a Home Depot in Cobourg so that was our destination.
Hard to tell but it was flurrying the whole way down.
Success! The Home Depot had our rod and a couple other items we needed. After travelling down the main highway we decided to take the "back" way home along the old two lane highway.
It had stopped flurrying by now and the sun was peeping out.
Beautiful barn made into a home.
I love this barn!
And the horses in the paddock???yard???corral??? Kim, correct me!
The clouds are just hanging over Lake Ontario. We are to get quite a storm tonight into tomorrow night.
We arrived back home just before lunch. I wanted to fill the feeders so the birds and squirrels could eat up before the storm. I guess the crow paid a visit while we were gone!
Sweet Pea feet and the crow's feet.
The snow is just the right consistency to see the little segments in the crow's foot. When my Dad and I would go for walks in the Winter when I was a kid he would always point out the various track's of the animals and ask me what animal I thought it was. Growing up on a farm my Dad learned to identity most wild animal tracks. Walks with my Mum in the Summer usually had her identifying the various wildflowers including their Latin names. Something she was taught in school.
Goldfinches and a lone junco enjoying the birdseed.
I didn't realize I had taken this photo until I downloaded them. I think it was a Goldfinch taking off from the feeder. The birdseed was flying!

As I said before we are waiting for the next storm to hit. We are supposed to go from snow to rain over a twenty- four hour period. Not fun to drive in or shovel.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend!
Robin

  2. Absolutely beautiful photos! I love the bright colors in the first one. My dad loved to walk in the woods and look for tracks too, and pick up unusual rocks. He really enjoyed things like that, but my mom didn't care so much for it. Hope your family gets over the flu soon.

    1. Hi Henny, thanks for your lovely words about my photos! The berries in the first photo are very welcome this time of year when it is so drab. I love picking up rocks too! I usually incorporate them in my gardens. Thanks also for your good wishes for a quick recovery for my families flu. I always worry when Mum gets sick. It doesn't happen often but when it does she really gets sick. She is 83 now so it is hard on her.

  3. Brrrrr, I'm cold just looking at the photos. :-)

You got great winter shots of the fields, the barns, etc. Really lovely. Bitterly cold, but lovely. The shots of the crows' tracks are great, especially the segments. My parents didn't teach me anything useful at all...except, perhaps, how NOT to be. LOL. (Well, that's not quite fair for Mom, but I digress.)

I would say "paddock," just because that's the word I'm more accustomed to using. I would use "corral" for a fenced space that's smaller, no grass for grazing, more for simple confinement. But don't ask me, it's been over 30 years since I've had horses in my life.

Stay warm and safe this weekend. Depending on weather, my grocery run might have to wait till Sunday!

    1. Hi Kim, it was very cold first thing. I wore "pretty gloves" and froze! When we headed out to Cobourg I put on proper gloves!
It was a lovely day despite the snow. By lunchtime it had warmed up quite a bit.
Thanks for the info about a paddock. I watched enough Bonanza and Little House On The Prarie growing up I should remember what it is called.
We have no plans to do any travelling until Tuesday. Please be safe yourself Kim. Give the boys a snuggle for me.

  4. Because we are in the Detroit area, our weather forecast is exactly the same as yours, actually, it hits us, THEN goes to you. Love your squirrel photos! catchatwithcarenandcody

    1. Hi Caren, we occasionally listen to a Detroit radio station so we do find out what weather will hit us a day or two after it passes by you.
      Take care!

  5. Those black & whitr pics are great although I'm not sure if you shot them in B&W or if that was all the colour there was. It sure is a bleak time of year. I hope your storm isn't too wild.... we're also in for a mix of snow and rain. Messy.
Hope your mom gets over the flu quickly.

    1. They weren't meant to be black and white, you are right that was all the colour there was!
So far the storm isn't too bad, just a couple of inches of snow. Hope your storm wasn't too bad. We heard you were cold again.

  6. Hello, nice to meet you and thankyou for visiting my blog.
I love the imprint of the crows foor in the snow, thankfully we do not get much snow here and when it comes it creates chaos. lol
I grew up being taught the wild flower and tree names and I think its such a shame that now the kids are not given nature lessons, my Grandchildren dont seem to know an Oak from a Beech.
I still have a little book I won for naming wild flowers when I was quite small.
Love the photos. have a lovely Christmas.

    1. Hi Briony, thanks for popping by!
I imagine you aren't accustomed to much snow. We usually have pretty snowy winters here.
I agree, kids are not taught about nature anymore. Something we so enjoyed when we were kids.
      Have a wonderful Christmas too!

  7. Love that tenth picture. I used to have a barn that looked just like that up on a little hill. Great pictures as usual. I think you can call that either a corral or a paddock, all in where you live and what kind of riding that you do. I sure hope those horse get to go in a barn at night. Great post.

    1. Hi Marg, I love old barns. I spent a lot of time in my grandfathers growing up. The horses I assumed go into the barn you liked as it was right beside the paddock they were in.
      Have a wonderful weekend.

  8. Wonderful photos but my favorite is the first one.
We don't seem to have as many birds around in the winter. Lately it's just been crows and chickadees.

    1. Hi Karen, pure luck with the first photo. I was just taking a photo of the berries and the Junco popped in.
We seem to get a good variety of birds here which pleases me. I just wish we had some mourning doves. Two were sitting up in one of the trees in the backyard but didn't come down to the feeder. Hopefully they will soon!

    1. As this is our first Fall/Winter in this house I had no idea what the bittersweet would look like. It went from green in the summer to yellow in the fall and now to red. It is beautiful.
Glad you liked the last photo. I laughed when I first saw it.

  10. Beautiful photos =)
Love seeing the birds getting filled up on seed. I sometimes feel bad for them when I see their feathers are all fluffed up to keep themselves warm.

    1. I too feel bad for the birds in this cold weather. They are so tiny it is remarkable they make it through our winters.
      Have a good week.
