"Dim All The Lights"

A few nights ago Chuck turned on our "Starlight Lava Lamp" while we were watching TV. We found this lamp at my Favourite antique store (now closed😢) some years ago. It is from the late 1960's or early 1970's. We keep our home rather cool so it takes a good two hours to heat up and start bubbling. It is fun to watch.
I've noticed on a few blogs some of the other bloggers have taken up a challenge to declutter. I have been meaning to clean out some of my kitchen cupboards so I made a start a couple days ago. This is the contents of a couple shelves. When we moved in 4 months ago I really didn't organize the cupboards as I put things away. We now have a kitchen half the size of our old one so I have to keep this organized.
Can someone tell me why different brands of "spaghetti" take different times to cook? It is just the two of us so I don't cook a whole box of pasta at a time. I end up with a little bit of each brand left. I am too frugal to throw it out!
Here is my main food cupboard after the sorting. I only found a bag of Craisins that were past their best before date. The birds don't mind!
While I was reorganizing I could hear the birds chattering away at the feeders. I looked out and there must have been 30 birds at the feeders. It was a feeding frenzy! I had filled the feeders a couple hours before.
The squirrels were snatching up all the peanuts too.
Then it started ice pelleting. That explains it. I guess the birds felt the pressure changing and were stocking up on food. It only lasted about 10 minutes and was done. Chuck phoned me from work and  said it was snowing quite heavily there. Other parts of Ontario were hit quite hard with snow and ice.
Today started out as a beautiful sunny, cold day. We went for a great walk before lunch. It has now clouded over.
Many types of birds enjoy the cones from the tamarack tree. When I took this photo there was around twenty birds in the tree.
Miss Kitty has been enjoying time with us. Isn't she beautiful?
Love the chickadees!

No big plans this weekend. Chuck continues to paint our bedroom and I will finish off decluttering the kitchen.
Enjoy your weekend!
Robin

  1. Good for you for decluttering! Your kitchen might be half the size of your former one, but it's still massive from my perspective. I really want my garage decluttered (again!), so I can shift more stuff out of the house. LOL.

I can't answer the question about the pasta. I tried some gluten-free pasta, various brands -- some of them are yechy, some not bad. But as for cooking time...maybe a different predominant grain? You know I'm moving to "no grain, no pain!"

All the critters know where to go to get a good meal, expired Craisins nothwithstanding. Ha.

    1. It has taken awhile to get use to the smaller kitchen but I do love it. No more sore hips by the end of the day!
You are probably right Kim about the pasta. I didn't think of that.
      Have a great weekend!

  2. The only thing I can think of with the pasta is that it is different thicknesses.
I like the chickadees to and they seem to be the only birds at my feeders lately.

    1. Hi Karen, you are probably right too about the pasta. Frustrating when I end up with 4 or 5 part boxes!
We do have a few different birds at the feeders but not the variety we had at our old house. Only thing I miss about the old house!

  3. I love your Starlight Lava lamp. I'd never even heard of them. We have 2 ordinary ones, one with red wax and one with green water (?) and white wax. The green one gets used a lot but not the red. Don't really know why.
Your pantry cupboard is very neat and organized. Very rewarding to see, isn't it!

    1. Hi G.M. the lava lamp is very pretty. It looks like it has stars all through the goop when it is boiling.
It is rewarding to me to see my cupboards organized. What started it too was I couldn't find my muffin liners and I wanted to make muffins. Now I know where they are!

  4. Love this post! I still enjoy lava lamps too! we have two and they do take a while to heat up and start getting pretty. Love to watch them. "dim all the lights"--that was a Donna Summer song, right? Oh how we loved the disco music and dancing!

    1. It is surprising how many people love lava lamps.
"Dim All The Lights" was a Donna Summer song. She is such a wonderful singer. I will admit to disco dancing too!

  5. It's so lovely to see other people's wild life, so different from here in uk. Our Squirrels ar grey or red and we don't have those lovely little birds over here.

What do you think it is that makes us all turn out our cupboards after Christmas, lot of us are doing it. lol

Love the lava lamp, so relaxing.

    1. Hi Brioony, we have little red squirrels here too. It is interesting how we have different wildlife in different countries.
I think everyone just wants to start with a clean slate(or clean cupboards!) once the New Year starts.
      Have a great weekend!

  6. There's just two of us, and I don't really like pasta... and oddly enough we have a tonne of it in the house. We have a friend who works for Italpasta and he sends boxes home with Dave! It's a good thing it doesn't go bad!

Miss Kitty looks quite comfy in her bed - what a beauty she is.
And you've reminded me - I need to add bird seed and peanuts to the grocery list!

    1. We usually have pasta a couple times a week. But no more 99 cents a box! it seems to have doubled in price in the last year or so.
Miss Kitty is gorgeous. We are still trying to figure out if she IS a stray.
Luckily I won a photo contest with a bird food company and received coupons for free bird food. Save a bit anyway!

  7. I love a good declutter, haven't had one for a bit so probably due one. Miss Kitty certainly is very pretty. Sounds like the birds have had a beanfeast xx

    1. It is silly isn't it how a good declutter makes one feel so good!
I love British expressions. Beanfeast is a good one!
