"Pictures In The Sky"

With the wild weather we have been having this last week the skies have been beautiful. We have gone from below normal temperatures to above normal all in the course of twenty four hours.
We still have no snow. I have no problem with that but I know many people love the snow.
This was taken very early one morning out on our back deck. It was quite cold and I just had on my pj's and slippers. I dashed out nearly tripping head over heels over Miss Kitty who was waiting to be let in. I let her in the house and then took a number of photos . She stood at the door hollering at me to feed her breakfast. I complied!
On our loooonnnnggg walk on Sunday we noticed the beavers have made a start on another tree. This one is rather close to a road.
Chickadee enjoying some peanuts and cranberries.
I put out cranberries in hopes the Robin's find them. We have a few hanging around the yard.
When I look out at the feeders it isn't too often no matter the weather that a Junco isn't there.
Brighton Bay frozen over.
Two swans found some open water.
Not the best photo's. I didn't want to scare them and I only had along my 5X zoom pocket camera.
Today we are in the middle of an ice storm. It started freezing rain around eight o'clock this morning. Thankfully this isn't one of Chuck's working days so we are staying home today. This squirrel kept sliding off the feeder.
Terrible photo but you can see the ice accumulating on the bittersweet.
For no reason at all besides it is so cute I am including a photo of two dormouse's cuddling. This is NOT my photo, Kim sent me the link to an article about the dormouse. I thought on a day like today everyone could use a cute photo.

Take care.
Robin

  1. Swans! How wonderful to see them!

And a robin! I never see robins till it's closer to spring, not in our neighbourhood, though I have in the past in wooded areas in the west end. Sometimes I'll hear them, but not in January.

The clouds can be so amazing, can't they? I caught glimpses of pink in the east this morning, on the way in to work. "....Pink sky in the morning, sailors take warning."

I hope your freezing rain has transitioned to rain now. I don't know what it's doing out there at the moment. I could hear freezing rain against the window a little while ago, then it seemed to ease and get a bit brighter, now it's getting dark again. I'm hoping for a safe trip home. :-)

Enjoy the rest of the day and stay safe and cosy.

    1. Hi Kim, I was surprised to see the swans but very happy!
We are seeing Robin's on a daily basis on our walks. Some days it is so cold it is remarkable they survive.
At 4:00 it is still freezing rain. I really hope it warms up soon.
Hope you arrived home safe and stay warm this evening!

  3. Love those clouds!! This week our clouds are giving us LOTS of rain. The ground is still frozen so we have large puddles everywhere.

We've been feeding the birds during the 6 weeks that the snow has been around. Well, we have a feeder or two up all the time but we've done extra things like put suet on the ground for the Varied Thrushes and Towhees that don't hang on to a suet cage. Yesterday a
cheeky squirrel came by and picked up the plastic container with the suet in it and made off with it! How he got over the chain link fence is beyond me but we looked and that suet was gone.

    1. Hi G.M, our weather has been so up and down for the last couple weeks. Now we are supposed to be around 4 or 5 for the next few days.
I have noticed we get many more goldfinches here and they empty the Niger feeder in a few days. Funny story about the squirrel taking off with your plastic container of suet. In Nova Scotia I tried putting out a suet cage twice but both times the crows ripped them down and took them.
      Have a good week!

  4. Up by the other end of the province (near T. Bay) we have plenty of snow and ice, but it has been creeping up near freezing for a couple of days. Lovely photos!

    1. We seem to be in a dry pocket here in south eastern Ontario. We do need the snow for the wells and farmer's fields.
      Enjoy the warmer weather!

    1. Hi Karen, wow you must be loving your warmer temperatures! Very Spring-like.
Between my aging camera and the quickness of the chickadees I am having a hard time shooting any decent photos of them. I am hoping a new camera is in my future!

    1. Hi Sandra, thanks for your kind words! The bittersweet vine on the fence makes a great drop back for the birds.
      Enjoy your week!

  7. Your sky pictures are so pretty. Robin, I had to laugh about your tripping over the cat...it is the same way here...animals coming and going. One of these days I'm afraid I might really fall and get hurt. That last picture of the doormouse is just adorable. I love it!

    1. Hi Henny, I do love spending time looking up at the sky, well not today as we are still receiving freezing rain!
When our last cat died it felt so strange to be able to walk without tripping over her or her toys. All but a few years of my life I haven't had a pet.
      Dormice are adorable!

Glad you obeyed Miss Kitty =)
I always thought robins didn't stick around during winter?

    1. Hi Maggie, I try to look towards the west every afternoon before sunset to see what the sky looks like. Most afternoons it is beautiful. I just happened to look out the window the other morning and saw the moon in the last of the four sky photos. Miss Kitty us hard to ignore as she is a typical Siamese and has a very loud, demanding meow!
The last three winters the Robin's have hung around the Quinte area. My parent's used to live in St Catharines and probably for the last ten years they were in their house they had Robin's too. Very strange!
