"Do You Hear The Robin's Sing?"

"No human's were harmed in the taking of these photo's!" (See last post)

They certainly were singing yesterday! We were expecting a snowstorm so I popped out early and did the grocery shopping. After feeding Miss Kitty, Chuck and I headed out for our walk. Along the way we noticed so many Robins. We stopped by one crabapple tree that was full of Robins. I hadn't brought my camera and was kicking myself for forgetting it. Right after we arrived home from our walk I went out and filled all the feeders. I came back inside and was puttering around in the kitchen and turned and looked out at the backyard. It was a feeding frenzy! The yard was full of birds.
There was around twenty Robins in the bittersweet vine eating the berries and numerous other birds were at the feeders and on the ground.
I read online that the birds can feel a change in the barometric pressure and that signals them to eat as they don't want to be trying to find food in a storm.
Luckily I had charged my camera battery before we went to bed the night before. I never noticed before that the Junco's have an interesting eyebrow thing going on!
The frenzy went on for about forty minutes while it lightly snowed.
This bird spent a few minutes checking out one of the neighbour's bird houses.
This Red Breasted Nuthatch posed nicely for a few minutes.
Here are yesterdays feline visitors. Both have such beautiful eyes!
This was taken during the storm last night. We ended up with a couple more inches of snow. It was the  light, fluffy variety so not bad to shovel. We are expecting another storm tomorrow with quite a bit of snow this time.

How many more days until Spring????

Have a great weekend!
Robin

  1. Love the up close and personal photos of birds. Junco eyelashes, how fun! The first photo of the robin on the bittersweet is incredible. You ought to submit that to Birds n Blooms magazine or something! I just love it.

    1. Hi Marcie, I am so glad you enjoy the photos! I had such a great time taking them. For once my camera was working perfectly. Maybe I will look into submitting the first photo to Birds n Blooms. I enjoy that magazine very much!

    2. My second child, a daughter, had a subscription to that magazine for years. She loved birds so much, that my mom made her a quilt with birds printed on some of the fabrics. I have my grandmother's hand-me-down North American Bird Guide, so I think it runs in our family! :D

  2. So wonderful to see all the bird visitors you have in your yard there. The robins have been coming by every evening here, hanging out in the neighbor's Weeping Willow tree. I love seeing them in the sunset light. I hope the next snowstorm isn't a big one.

    1. Hi Robin, It was a crazy 40 minutes while the birds were here. It was a little crazy again this morning after I fed them. It must be beautiful to see the Robin's at sunset. Fingers crossed we don't get as much snow as they are predicting in tomorrows storm!
      Take care.

  3. I love all of your little birds, I notice that your robins are not the same as ours but beautiful just the same. The last picture could almost make a Christmas card.
We moan if we get a little flurry of snow here, everthing comes to a standstill when we get a lot, lol, we are not used to it.

    1. Hi Briony, your Robin's, I believe, are a bit smaller and coloured a bit different than ours. Both are beautiful!
I understand how everything comes to a standstill in your part of the world if you get snow. You just aren't accustomed to it.
      Have a good weekend.

In two months time this winter will just be a memory, or I keep telling myself.

    1. Thank you Cheryl! It is surprising sometimes that my old camera still has some life left in it!
Sweet Pea is an expert hunter of birds. He waits sometimes in one of our pine trees for some unsuspecting bird to land. He is unsuccessful many more times than successful though!

  6. Robin, I think those bird pics are the best I've ever seen on your blog and you take wonderful pics all the time! Amazing!

My aunt is here....it's going okay -- I'll fill you in late Sunday or maybe Monday, depending on when she leaves. Not sure we'll get to the greenhouse tomorrow!

The weather office has updated the forecast and now we are supposed to get 10 inches of snow tomorrow. YIKES!

  8. Great pics!! I wonder if a squirrel has at some time chewed away at your neighbour's birdhouse?

I have never noticed that Juncos have eyebrows. Kind of funny.

I hope if you do get the 10 inches of snow that you have nowhere to go for a while!

    1. Hi G.M. it does look like something had chewed at the entrance of the bird house!
We are still supposed to get 10 inches of snow as of this morning. I quickly went out and got some fruit and veg at the grocery store and then we did our walk. Home and tucked up in the house by 9:30! Chuck is painting and I will shortly start some baking.
      Have a good day!

Friday for some reason was such a great day for taking photos at the feeders. Glad I was home for it!

    1. Hi Rose, I know I was having a good time watching the birds! I love the bittersweet vine too. We just moved into this house last August.I have no experience with Bittersweet Vine so I did not realize it turns yellow then red in the winter. So glad it is there!
      Have a good week!

  11. Wonderful pictures. I am glad your cats are outdoor cats. Do you get yelled at for letting them out of the house? I am posting this to my sister's FB page. She has been taking photos of birds for years that come to her yard.

    1. Hi, Thanks for popping by!
We actually don't own any cats right now, the cats that visit us are neighbourhood cats. I can't resist them so we feed them and let some of them in the house.
      Have a good day!

  12. Very glad not to have seen any robins around here yet!!!!!!

Yes, I'm sure birds can sense a storm coming. And barometric pressure makes sense. After all, "olden joints and bones" can sense coming storm too. From the change in barometric pressure. :-)

Wow, the eyebrow thing. Cooool photo capture.

We are having and in for lots more snow. 6-11" possible. On top of what we have!

    Yish....

    1. Hi Luna, I do worry about the Robins especially on a day like today. It is snowing quite heavily. It seems so sad to see them hunched up in the trees.

Robin's use to be a harbinger of Spring around here too. Now more so it is the Red Winged Blackbirds.
      Have a good day!

  14. We are getting the same snow storm, 15-25 cm is predicted. We must live in the same part of Ontario. The birds were in a feeding frenzy this morning. We've had the large flock of robins too, seeing them earlier this year than before. We also had a large flock of goldfinches (a charm) flitting around the back fields for about a week. I've been taking lots of photos through the windows today. Stay warm and safe.

Goldfinches are daily visitors here too along with the Juncos. Taking photos thru the windows is the best way to do it today!
      Take care!
