"Mama You've Been On My Mind"

With it being a rather dreary day here today I decided to catch up on my ironing. It seemed every time I went into my closet to get out a blouse it wasn't ironed. Ironing always makes me think of my Mum. She and Dad married in 1957. Before they were married my Mum had completed her nursing training. They were married two months afterwards and my sister quickly came along followed a few years later by my brother and then another few years later by me.  My Mum loved to iron! After I was born my Mum went back to work full time but always worked the 3 to 11 shift. Monday morning was ironing time in our house.
Mum had a sprinkler exactly like this one. As I was home with Mum while my brother and sister were in school I do remember her letting me sprinkle the clothes. I can remember sitting on the kitchen floor playing with my Barbie while Mum ironed. I spoke to Mum today and asked her if she still irons on Monday morning. Sadly when she fell last December she injured her arm and finds it terribly uncomfortable to iron. She stated she does miss it but at 83 does not feel guilty giving it up! She now mostly wears soft clothing so no ironing is really required.
We have had a few sunny days thankfully. I looked up the name of this bee. It is a "Green Sweat Bee" Interesting name!
Mama and Papa Cardinal have been busy at the feeders.
My poor little bird bath has seen better days.
Cortes popped by for a quick visit. Quick because Miss Kitty spotted him and chased him off. I don't know what it is about Cortes she doesn't like. To watch them run off it looks like she is chasing off an annoying little brother.
One evening I looked over to our neighbour's clothesline deck. These two were crashed there.
Smokey early one morning.
Miss Kitty is certainly enjoying the log. It is a favourite scratching post.

Quiet week this week after all the adventures last week. Off to spend the afternoon with my friend Norma tomorrow after a morning of errands. Goodness, what an exciting life I lead!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Robin

  1. you do lead an exciting life, all the pictures prove that to me. love the photo of your parents, my dress in 1963 was almost like this one.. sorry to hear about her accident.. you said she LET you sprinkle, I HAD to sprinkle After taking them off the clothes line and then iron. I hated every moment of it and wanted to be a boy since my brother did NOTHING but take out the garbage. thanks for the memoires, and now it does't matter and I look back and wonder why it upset me. we had a coke bottle with a stopper sprinkler on it.

    1. Hi Sandra, so glad you enjoyed the post! Growing up my brother didn't do a heck of a lot either! My Mum was happy if he managed to make his bed. Now he has a wife who works full time so he must do half of the housework or the house would look like heck.
      Have a good week!

  2. Your Mum and Dad look like they have come out of a film, what a handsome pair.
As for ironing, I hate it. I leave the ironing board up in the spare room so that I can do it as I go and not end up with a pile. lol
The cats are just wonderful. we were only saying today that we never get fed up with looking at our lot. The little paws, the sweet little mouths and whiskers, don't you just love them to bits.
You pipped me by one year on getting married, we married in 1964 and still going strong, well not as strong as we were but still here, lol

    1. Hi Briony, my parents are rather glamour looking aren't they? ; )
I did hate ironing for so many years. With Chuck being in the Air Force he had to have ironed uniforms everyday. Towards the end of his career the military changed to combat looking uniforms for the regular ranks so NO ironing! I was so happy!
Now I find I like to wear blouses and I actually enjoy ironing. Crazy I know!
I do love everything about cats too.
      Have a good day!

  3. Your log is now a scratching post...LOL! Oh my, I remember sprinkling the clothes too, and felt very grown-up when I was allowed to iron for the entire family. My father wore pressed shirts to the office, and of course we all had blouses with plackets, collars and buttoned cuffs. Nowadays, if it needs ironing, I break out my steamer instead! LOL!

    1. Hi Vicki, the log is getting much use I see by the scratches in it. My Dad wore pressed shirts to the office too. I remember he had his suits dry cleaned by his shirts never went to the cleaners. He carried a freshly ironed handkerchief everyday in his suit pocket too. I do remember wearing blouses to school but Mum did ALL the ironing.
      Have a great day!

  4. Your mom was so, so pretty...and your dad was a nice looking man. I enjoyed hearing about her...ironing clothes is not may favorite thing to do, but I don't hate it. Just not a favorite. I still have shirts that I iron...

Love all the kitty pics...think that log is definitely a winner. Maybe one day the cats will let you use it to sit a pot of flowers on.

    1. Hi Rose,m thanks for your lovely compliments about my parents. My Mum has naturally very straight hair and the day before the wedding she gave herself a perm. She hated how it turned out but I think it looks very sweet.
I find I prefer to wear lighter blouses in the summer now so am ironing much more than I use to.
I hope to use the log in the Fall for part of my Fall display on our front steps. Maybe another adventure to the beach is in the plans! I maybe could find another log.
Wishing you and Roger a great day!

    1. Hi Eileen, glad you enjoyed the photo of Mum and Dad. I really only started ironing after we got married and had to do Chuck's uniforms. So I really didn't do much ironing for myself. Now Chuck wears old pants and t-shirts to work as he destroys his clothes regularly being an electrician.
      Have a good week!

  6. Beautiful photo of your parents. I'm sorry for your Mum's accident. My mother did a lot of ironing thru the years also. I have 6 cats and there is one (a female) who hates our newest male. We are constantly having to keep one of them behind closed doors. The vet and I have tried EVERYthing! Maybe in time, things will improve.

    1. Hi Mildred, thanks for your kind words about my parent's wedding photo. I have a blown up version hanging in our living room. I didn't realize you had six cats, I thought just a couple! When Chuck and I were first married we lived in my sister's home while she lived in an apartment with her boyfriend. She had a cat and dog who were not allowed to live in the apartment. Her boyfriend had just signed a year's lease for the apartment a week before they met so they decided to live there together and we with our cat would live in my sister's home. Her cat HATED our cat and would constantly hiss at him. He loved everyone and couldn't figure out what was going on. We separated them for the first month or so but one day going to work I forgot to. Came home and everyone was intact so we kept on. They never became friends but by the time we left they would sleep on the same bed together. I hope things get better between your two.
      Take care.

  7. I love that picture of your mom and dad. She is beautiful and your dad is very handsome. Anytime I pick up an iron, I start thinking about mama. I used to watch her sprinkle the clothes and then roll them into what looked like balls of dough that was left to rise. She would put all the sprinkled clothes in the refrigerator. I don't know if being cold made the clothes iron better or just kept her cooler while she ironed. You are friends with so many sweet pretty cats. You always have the best pictures!

How nice we have such similar memories of our Mums! I do remember Mum putting the clothes in the freezer too in the Summer. I think it was to make her feel cooler while ironing.
      Glad you enjoy the photos.

  8. Lovely picture of your parents. My mom didn't like to iron but I remember her sprinkler. It was a glass bottle with a top that fit in the bottle with little holes in it.
Always enjoy your back yard critters.

When Kim was here visiting she made the comment how it was addictive to sit and watch all the critter activity in the backyard. I know I spend probably too much time watching everyone!
      Have a good day!

  9. That's such a wonderful wedding photo, your parents were a lovely-looking couple.

There's nothing enjoyable about ironing, IMO. I only do it under extreme circumstances (like wrinkly curtains), and then only under duress. I don't bother anymore for my clothes, and avoid buying things that I know will wrinkle and require pressing. I'd rather scoop out my cats' litter boxes. LOL. That's par for the course: I never minded mucking out a stall, but "domestic" chores were and still are awful. Vacuuming being the only exception, as you know! :-)

I am p*ssed off at your cardinals. Enough said.

Have a good visit with Norma; I hope it goes well.

    1. Hi Kim, It is a lovely photo of Mum and Dad. I would have loved to wear her wedding dress when I got married but she cut it up to put around my sister's bassinet when she was born. You know my Mum isn't sentimental!
As I have said in a couple comments above I hated ironing having to always iron Chuck's uniforms. But the last few years that hasn't been the case so I find it relaxing now.
I don't know where the cardinals disappeared to the days you were here.
      Have a good day!

I don't have a specific day for ironing, just when it seems I go into the closet and I have nothing ironed to wear! Actually as I have gotten older I find I am buying more blouses and such that need ironing.
Looks like the weather is supposed to be decent this week. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Vix, Growing up a large copy of the wedding photo sat on an end table. I was born 7 years after my parent's were married and probably didn't notice the photo on the table for another 5 or 6 years so my parent's looked at bit different. My Mum had a beehive and my Dad had the long sideburns and moustache of the early 1970's. I remember thinking that they looked so different from the photo.
I am going to ask my Mum for her sprinkling container when we see her in a few weeks. I use the steam feature on my iron but maybe for old times sake I will sprinkle the clothes.
      Have a great week!

  14. Your gorgeous mother and father, were married in 1957. We were married in 1958. So I recognized the look of the wedding gown and hair style. :-)

I remember sprinkling clothes, before steam irons became every-day items. But I never liked to iron. So now, I don't.

Only his shirts, when he goes to work in our family drug store a bit, and then goes to his Rotary Lunch Meetings. Nothing else. I have declared my Independence, from this disliked task!!!!! >,-)

    1. Hi Luna, Mum went "over the river" to Buffalo to a bridal shop there to purchase her wedding dress. Her hair she permed herself and singed the bangs so badly they fell out in clumps. Luckily she had lots of hair and no one noticed!
For 25 years I ironed Chucks uniforms and shirts for work. Now he wears t-shirts and work pants that require no ironing so I find I enjoy ironing my stuff, and the odd time a shirt of his! ; )
      Have a good day!

  15. I like to iron, too. I only like ironing my own stuff, though. When I was a child my mother would sew for me in the evenings, but I had to stay at the ironing board and press pillowcases and such. My 87 year old mother still irons her clothes. I think she likes it, too.
She used to sprinkle my dad's shirts with a mixture of starch and water, roll them up and put them in a bag, and take them out later for perfect presses!

    1. Hi Pom Pom, finally someone else who likes to iron!!! ; )
Mum even ironed dishcloths and did the pillowcases too. Mum had a special bag to store the sprinkled clothes too. She seemed to go through a lot of irons. I have had the same one for 33 years but Chuck has changed the cord three times now.
      Enjoy your week!

  16. What a handsome couple your parents were. Your Mom's dress is so pretty!!
I don't mind ironing and I even volunteer to iron my son's dressy shirts ( for work).I have an ironing board that I rarely take out of the closet preferring to use a thick bath sheet folded in thirds that fits exactly on the long counter in my laundry room. The iron sits there waiting for Mondays. Yes, I'm another routine oriented person.

I am glad someone else enjoys ironing. My Mum would iron my brother's work shirts too (Mum lives in a little apartment in their basement) but Bob buys the no iron shirts from Marks Work Warehouse now and just pops them out of the dryer right away so no wrinkles.
My Mum and Dad had their routines too. Maybe that is why I tend to just go with the flow and do whatever whenever!
      Have a wonderful day!

I do feel very blessed to live where we do. I am not a big city person and do enjoy the small things.
